Before configuring the Routing and Remote Access Service, make sure that any modem devices that you want to use for remote clients has been installed and configured. You can view a list of installed modems from Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel.
To configure the Routing and Remote Access Service
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Routing and Remote Access.
- Right-click your server, and then select Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access. The Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Wizard appears.
Note: If the Routing and Remote Access Service is already running, it is recommended that you disable the service and then reconfigure it using these steps. Your existing configuration will be overwritten.
- On the Welcome page, click Next.
- On the Common Configurations page, select Remote access server.
- On the Remote Client Protocols page, ensure that TCP/IP is listed under Protocols, and then select Yes, all of the required protocols are on this list.
- On the Network Selection page, select the network connection that is connected to your local network. This must be a static IP address and typically will be an address of 192.168.16.2.
- On the IP Address Assignment page, if you are using a DHCP server in your local network, it is recommended that you select to automatically assign IP addresses to your remote clients. Otherwise, select From a specified range of addresses and then on the next page specify an IP address range that matches the IP address range used by your client computers.
- On the Managing Multiple Remote Access Servers page, select No, I don't want to set up this server to use RADIUS now.
- On the Completing the Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Wizard page, click Finish.
- On the warning dialog that appears indicating you must configure the DHCP Relay Agent with the IP address of your DHCP server, click OK.
Note: If you are not using the DHCP service on your Small Business Server computer, then it will be necessary to configure the DHCP Relay Agent. For more information on configuring a relay agent, see Help.
