Using the Set Up Computer Wizard

The Set Up Computer wizard simplifies the process of configuring client computers for incorporation into the Small Business Server network. The wizard can create a floppy disk, which, when run on the client, configures such attributes as the client machine name, DHCP configuration, and application installation-everything needed for the client computer to be fully connected to the network and fully functioning with the appropriate applications. If the client computer name is already established, DHCP is configured, and the computer is joined to the domain. No floppy is needed. The user can log on the network, and a logon script created by the wizard will configure applications and whatever else is required.

To begin the Set Up Computer wizard if you did not use the Add User wizard

  1. Open the Small Business Server Administrator Console.
  2. Expand the Small Business Server (BackOffice Manager), it may already be expanded. Click Computers.
  3. The right pane shows all computers in the network and provides a number of wizards. Click Set Up Client Computer.
  4. At the Welcome page, click Next.
To continue running the Set Up Computer Wizard
  1. On the Computer Name page, type a unique computer name (either a new name or the name of an existing client computer), and click Next.
  2. On the Applications page, note that Install the selected applications is checked by default. Small Business Server takes the items here from the client applications list, which is configurable through the Define Client Applications wizard on the To Do List. You can also check Do not install any applications, if you want only network connectivity.
  3. Click Next.
  4. On the Neworking Setup page, you can specify to Create a networking setup disk, which will configure the client computer with all the settings specified in the wizard.
If the client's computer name is already set to the name you entered earlier, the network card is set to obtain an IP address automatically, and the computer is joined to the domain, click Do not create a networking setup disk. The next time the user logs on, a logon script will run.
  5. If you are configuring multiple computers, click Do not create a networking setup disk. When you set up the last computer, click Create a networking setup disk. At this point all of the user and computer objects in the Active Directory will be written to the floppy disk; at the client computer, the computer and users for that computer can be selected from a list.
  6. Click Next.
  7. At the Completing of the Add User Wizard page, review and verify the configuration options, and click Finish.

In an established environment, where a previous computer definition exists and a new workstation is being installed, the operation can be performed from the workstation.
From the SBS console, the computers defined to the server can be identified by clicking on the Computers folder.
When a new workstation is to be added to a domain or the server is re-built the domain will require a new SID in order to establish trust.

The following describes how to re-establish a trusted relationship between a workstation that was connected to the domain.

  1. Logon to the workstation as a user with Administrator status. Can't logon to the network yet.
  2. Start and then click Control Panel
  3. Click System and Network Identification
  4. Click Properties
  5. If the workstation was previously connected to the domain the domain name will be shown.
    • To re-establish trust
      1. Click Workgroup, enter any name and click OK
      2. A welcome message appears
  6. Click Domain and enter the domain name
  7. Click OK and after a wait a prompt appears for the server's Administrator id and password.
Once established, a welcome message is issued.
