NOTE: The following procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services.
To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".

After upgrading from the Inbox Assistant to the Rules Wizard, your rules may not behave as expected. The sequence in which rules are applied is different between the Inbox Assistant and the Rules Wizard.
Reorder the rules in the rules list or if necessary, rewrite the rules. Some rules are client-only rules (client-side rules), meaning they are only applied when Outlook is running. Others are server rules (server-side rules), meaning they are applied on the server before the message is sent to Outlook, so Outlook does not have to be running for these rules to be applied. Client-side rules are identified by the designation (client-only) at the end of the rule name. All other rules listed are server-side rules.

An example of a client-side rule would be one that moves an incoming message from your server-based Inbox to a folder in your personal folders (PST) file, on your computer. This rule is applied only when Outlook is running, because the PST is not available unless Outlook is running.

An example of a server-side rule would be one that moves an incoming message from your server-based Inbox to another folder located on the server. This rule can be applied whether Outlook is running or not, because both the Inbox and the target folder are located on the server.

The Inbox Assistant applies rules in the order they are listed in the rules list without regard to whether the rule is client-side or server-side. The Rules Wizard applies all server-side rules first, in the order they are listed, and then applies all client-side rules in the order they are listed, even though the two rule classes may be intermingled in the rules list.
