PC Knowledge Base - Configure POP3 Mailboxes and DNS

Good Knowledge Is Good2Use

Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes may not download new messages if Domain Name System (DNS) is not properly configured. The POP3 connector may be unable to download mail from the POP3 server, and it may log the following error message in the Application log of Event Viewer:

ID:8001
Source: POP3 Connector
No DNS server found. Domain name resolution will fail, thus mail will not be properly delivered. Since there are no DNS servers around, we will default to regular WinSock calls.
This behaviour can occur when Microsoft Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes cannot locate a DNS server. The POP3 connector is unable to download messages from the server that is specified in the mailbox properties if it cannot resolve the server name by DNS name.

NOTE: The preceding error message can also be displayed if you have the Winsock Proxy Client installed on your SBS version 4.5 server. If this is the case, remove the Winsock Proxy Client by means of Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before implementing any of the steps in the following resolution section.
