You will use the Administrator program's File menu (see figure below) to create the components that comprise an Exchange organisation or site.

If you have two or more Exchange Server connections open at the same time, make sure that the correct window is in the foreground when you create components.

• Connect to Server - This menu item allows you to administrate a Microsoft Exchange server remotely, as though you were logged into it directly. Although the Administrator program allows you to view all the objects in your organisation hierarchy, you cannot alter site connections, mailboxes, connectors or site servers unless you are directly connect to a server in that remote site with the administrator program.

  You must have administrative access on the remote site to perform remote administrator functions.

• Close - This menu item closes the active server connection window that you are using.
• New Mailbox - This menu item creates a new user mailbox. You must select a recipient container; otherwise, you are prompted to use the standard Exchange recipient container for that site.
• New Distribution List - This menu item creates a new distribution-list recipient. (You must select a recipient container first.) You must then confirm the properties for the distribution list.
• New Custom Recipient - This menu item creates a recipient in a foreign mail system (MS Mail, SMTP, X.400, or the connected gateway).
• New Other - This menu item displays the submenu shown below, which allows you to create other types of Microsoft Exchange objects.
  The File - New Other submenu allows you to create many Exchange objects. The items in this submenu are:
  • Server Monitor. Creates a process that watches the operational condition of one or more servers in a site; can be configured to generate alerts when certain conditions (such as a stopped system service) occur.
  • Link Monitor. Creates a process that monitors the state of messaging connections between Exchange sites and servers; the link monitors are configured to create alerts when errors occur.
  • Recipients Container. Creates custom containers for certain object types. A good example is creating a specific Internet recipient's container that holds all custom recipients that have SMTP addresses.
  • MTA Transport Stack. Defines underlying transport protocol for each X.400 or Dynamic RAS connector you create. Make sure that you have all necessary transport software set up properly in Windows NT (e.g., X.25 protocol); otherwise, cannot proceed beyond this configuration point.
  • X.400 Connector. Defines an X.400 connection to another Exchange site or foreign system. Before you select this item, you must define an MTA transport stack over which this connector is to communicate.
  • Dynamic RAS Connector. Set up a part-time remote access link between servers. You can set up an RAS connection over modem, ISDN, or X.25 systems if you have the appropriate MTA transport stack installed.
  • Site Connector. Sets up a connection between two Microsoft Exchange Server sites - typically, on the same logical LAN.
  • Directory Replication Connector. Creates a directory-sharing relationship between two Microsoft Exchange sites.
  • Dirsync Requestor. Configures a directory-synchronization requestor that is compatible with any messaging system that supports the Microsoft Mail 3.X directory-synchronization protocol. The Dirsync Requestor is most commonly used to request directory updates from a Microsoft Mail post office that is set up as a directory-synchronization server.
  • Dirsync Server. Configures a directory-synchronization server that is compatible with any messaging system that supports the Microsoft Mail 3.X directory-synchronization protocol.
  • Remote Dirsync Requestor. The remote Dirsync Requestor allows a foreign system's dirsync requestor to connect to a Microsoft Exchange dirsync server.
  • Information Store. Creates a public or private information store for an Exchange server. You can use this option only if a certain server does not currently have an information store of its own or if it has been deleted.
• Properties - This menu item enables you to view and edit settings for particular Exchange objects or containers. Double-clicking on the individual objects brings up the properties as well.
• Duplicate - This menu item creates a new recipient object with properties exactly like an existing one. Selecting a distribution list and clicking Duplicate, for example, brings up a new distribution list with a blank name but with all the members of the original list. This option is the same as using copy and paste functionality in other windows based applications. This option is not available if you have not highlighted or selected a recipient.
• Exit - This menu item closes all connections to Microsoft Exchange Servers and exits the Administrator program.
